Mobile applications are designed and developed to be used in various handheld mobile platforms such as iPhones, IPads and Android devices. These apps empower the customers with an interactive experience. These apps can be informative while others facilitate M-Commerce. Mobile commerce apps enable customers to purchase items directly from the owner; the client can log-in with their accounts, they can search & select products, view their specifications, add items to the cart, leave comments and lastly purchase these items. What was earlier possible only through websites, has been made easy with the ease of mobile applications.

We can see that the use of tablets and mobile devices has increased considerably; here is some data to support this:

Nearly one-fourth (24%) of total website traffic came from mobile devices in the first quarter of 2013 — up 78% from the same time in 2012 and 109% since 2011, according to  a recent report from Walker Sands . (walkersands.com)

The Quarterly Mobile Traffic Report, based on data from a sample of Walker Sands’ B2B and B2C clients in multiple industries, also found that mobile traffic to websites increased less than one percentage point between 4Q12 and 1Q13.

According to Adobe Digital Index which measures engagement on apps versus the Web for more than 600 brands; apps are used longer and more frequently by the users.

The charts below show the usage of apps in both mobile and tablets; Tablet users spend the better part of a half hour (24 minutes) in an app session, while smartphone sessions are much shorter at nearly 13 minutes. If you compare it to those browsing websites, the app sessions are three to four times longer. Consumers use smartphone apps more than twice as often as they visit the typical mobile web site. All combined, the app usage outpaces mobile web visits by an average of 100 minutes per month.
